Carbon and environmental reporting for Mitie Group is overseen by Jason Roberts, Group Director of Sustainability & Social Value.
Due to acquisitions and business growth, Mitie re-baselined in FY22, with the below tables showing FY22 performance, and targets from FY23 onwards. Mitie’s emissions data now includes all operations, including UK and overseas. We have two separate carbon targets to support our net zero commitments for Scope 1 and 2 by 2025, and Scope 3 by 2035.
Carbon targets (tCO2e) | FY22 New baseline* | FY23 | FY24 | FY25 | FY26 |
Scope 1 and 2 | 20,596 | 20,300 | 16,900 | 12,775 | 8,400 |

ESG targets
Mitie has set 14 industry-leading ESG targets. These targets relate to Mitie’s social value framework, and the focus areas highlighted within the following pillars: Environment, Responsible Supply Chain, People and Community. Our fifth pillar, Innovation, is embedded throughout.
View our ESG targetsFrom FY23, we have included both our overseas emissions, and our full Scope 3 emissions portfolio, including supply chain, and commuting and working from home to cover our entire workforce.
In FY24, Mitie produced 21,371 tCO2 Scope 1 and 2 (location based) and 20,941 tCO2 (market based). This was the second year we expanded reporting to include overseas. This, together with business growth and acquisitions, has caused a 5% decrease since FY23, using location-based figures. FY24 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been externally verified; certificates can be found here.
Mitie produced 215,353 tCO2 supply chain emissions in FY24, a 12% reduction from FY23. Comparing our total Scope 3 emissions in FY24: 273,336 tCO2 to FY23, we have made a 9% reduction.
20,900 tonnes of CO2e come from our >7,700 strong vehicle fleet, 98% of our Scope 1 and 2 emissions. We have accelerated our electric vehicle (EV) transition and have 5,065 EVs on the road. A further break down of this data, including Scope 3 categories, can be found in the Mitie Group Environmental Data.
Over 73% of our total emissions are linked to our supply chain. To tackle this, we are increasing engagement with our suppliers. We have received validation from the Science Based Target initiative for our supply chain target. In total, 60% of our suppliers (by spend), covering purchased goods and services, upstream transportation and distribution, will have committed to a science-based target methodology by FY27. FY24 performance shows that 14% of these suppliers have committed to a science-based target, and we will continue to engage further suppliers to increase this.

Having established stretching ESG targets for Mitie Group, it was crucial that monthly performance could be tracked and reported, enabling gaps to be identified and interventions developed. The nature of social value means performance data comes from a wide range of systems and locations across the business. By exporting data from various systems and linking them to the interactive visualisation platform, Power BI, we created our ESG dashboard. This allows users to drill down into target areas for each of the organisation’s social value pillars, and by business division.
Mitie uses the Social Value Portal to measure social value on specific contracts, incorporating the National TOMs Framework (Themes, Outcomes and Measures), primarily used in local authorities. We are also deploying the Thrive platform, a portal that aligns to PPN06/20 (Social Value Model) and allows our contracts to measure social value contributions as well as calculating our Group impact on social value. Our social value contribution in FY24 was £289million, 34% higher than FY23.
Mitie continuously reviews operations, measuring processes and results to ensure we are performing as well as possible across all aspects of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG). This focus on all aspects of sustainability, together with our approach to innovation and new ways of operating, saw Mitie rated the number one facilities management company globally with a risk rating of 10.5 Low Risk, based on the Sustainalytics ESG risk rating report.

Mitie has a Sustainability and Social Value Policy that covers the environment, energy, carbon and social value. This policy is complemented by an Environmental Policy Statement to provide further environmental detail. The policy is owned by Group Director of Sustainability & Social Value, Jason Roberts and is reviewed and updated annually. The Policy is signed by Mitie’s CEO Phil Bentley.
Following expansion of our ISO 50001 accreditation in 2023 from Mitie Energy to Mitie Group, this certificate now covers all of our significant energy use across our estate and incorporates our entire fleet of over 7,700 vehicles. Our Plan Zero strategy ensures that we are reducing our environmental impact through optimising the efficiency of our sites, which aligns with continuous improvement plans relating to energy performance. This accreditation compliments our ISO 14001:2015 certification, which also covers 100% of Mitie Group’s operations at all sites, providing an external best practice framework for identifying, managing, monitoring and controlling environmental issues, maximising our efforts to reduce our environmental footprint.
In addition, we have also achieved accreditation ISO 22301: Business Continuity Management, ISO 27001: Information Security, ISO 31000: Risk Management, and ISO 44001: Collaborative Relationships. All of these have been secured at a Group level, and therefore cover 100% of Mitie’s operations and sites.
We received third-party verification for our FY24 greenhouse gas data to ISO 14064-1 standard from Optera, along with our social value data, ensuring that our processes are accurate and transparent.
Mitie is a signatory of all three of The Climate Group’s global initiatives: RE100, EV100 and EP100. We are one of only 17 organisations in the world to do so and the only one operating in the facilities management industry.
Mitie sources 100% renewable electricity for sites where we control the energy procurement. RE100 is the global corporate renewable energy initiative, bringing together hundreds of large and ambitious businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity. Led by The Climate Group in partnership with CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project), RE100’s mission is to accelerate a global shift to clean energy and zero carbon grids – delivering a cleaner, healthier future.
In December 2018, Mitie became the first major UK FM provider to launch an electric vehicle (EV) fleet. In FY24, 66% of our over 7,700 vehicle fleet were electric vehicles (EVs) and we are on track to achieve 80% by FY25. EV100 is a global initiative bringing together forward-looking companies committed to accelerating the transition to EV and making electric transport the new normal by 2030.
In the face of rising fuel costs, stricter emissions targets, and a need to address climate change, fleet electrification marks a dramatic step towards reducing the financial and environmental cost of doing business.
Mitie is reducing our fuel consumption year-on-year. Current fleet initiatives include:
- Route planning to minimise unnecessary travel
- Speed limiters on all commercial vehicles (68mph)
- Telematics, including speed enforcement policy
- Vehicle selection to limit engine size to less than 110g/kmCO2
- Driver training that promotes safe, economical driving
- Driver awards to recognise good driving behaviour
- Artificial Intelligence Dashcam that monitors driver behaviour (speed, acceleration, harsh braking) and reduces incidents by up to 60%
- Carbon avoidance via a strategic partnership with Microsoft (Skype / Teams)
- Connected Workspace providing remote BMS connection to reduce travel to site
Mitie has committed to doubling energy productivity in alignment with ISO50001 Energy Management Standard. The Climate Group’s global EP100 initiative, in partnership with the Alliance to Save Energy, brings together a growing group of energy-smart companies committed to improving energy productivity and doing more with less.
Sustainalytics is a leading global provider of environmental, social, governance (ESG) and corporate governance data, research and analysis.
In the April 2024 Sustainalytics ESG risk rating report, Mitie was rated number seven out of all ranked business support services companies globally, with a 10.5 Low Risk score.
This means our organisation is at low risk of experiencing material financial impacts from ESG factors, due to strong ESG risk management. Areas assessed included carbon reduction plans, occupational health and safety, data privacy and security, and bribery and corruption. Mitie was also awarded leader status for Board Structure.
Out of the 14,000 companies assessed by Sustainalytics, Mitie is in the third percentile globally, with the first percentile being the lowest risk.
Mitie received the highest possible Platinum Award in SFMI’s 2023 report for the third year running.
The SFMI is the only sustainability benchmark for the UK’s facilities management sector. The ranking is compiled following three independent audits. These assess performance across 23 criteria, including sustainability, social value, energy, health and safety, employee development and diversity. In order to achieve the Platinum Award, organisations must demonstrate leadership across all areas and score 85 points or more.
MSCI is a leading provider of critical decision support tools and services for the global investment community.
In 2024, Mitie was rated AA from MSCI. This is the second highest rating available and means that only 10% of rated MSCI ACWI Index constituents, commercial services and supplies were ranked higher than Mitie.

Mitie has reported to CDP for the last 13 years and will continue to do so.
In the 2023 submission, Mitie received an A, which is in the ‘Leadership’ band. As a member of the A list, we are among only 2% of the 21,000 organisations that are assessed annually. This made Mitie one of only 362 companies to achieve this rating, globally.
In 2020, Mitie signed up to CDP Reporter Services Membership. Optera, an independent third-party, verified our direct and indirect carbon dioxide equivalent emissions (CO2e) to ISO 14064-3 standard.
With support from the Supply Chain Sustainability School and Rio Learn, who specialise in teaching accessible sustainability skills, Mitie has developed an education programme called Action Now.
Action Now focuses on getting sustainability to the frontline. The scheme provides a quarterly focus on areas of environmental learning including carbon, energy and biodiversity, social value with a focus on modern slavery, circular economy and resource efficiency, and sustainable procurement. The aim of this campaign is for all our 72,000 employees to have access to information and resources that provide a good understanding of environmental issues. To date, our learning activities have been completed over 10,000 times.
Greenhouse Gas (‘GHG’) Emissions as detailed in the 2024 Annual Report and Accounts.
Mitie sees the climate emergency as a business-critical issue that needs to be addressed within operations. Mitie’s FY24 global emissions intensity reduced by 14% in the last year to 4.75tonnes CO2e/£million revenue. We attribute these changes to our decarbonisation programme to replace fossil fuelled heating systems with low-carbon heat pumps. It is further noted that Mitie has increased its carbon inventory with some significant acquisitions over this period.
EcoVadis provides business sustainability ratings, intelligence and collaborative performance improvement tools for global supply chains. Mitie is rated with a score of 55 and we are incorporating the Ecovadis measuring solution into our supplier engagement and ESG health check process; both of our top paper manufacturer suppliers have a platinum Ecovadis rating.

Water is a precious, finite resource and we recognise that in our day-to-day operations. We have committed to reducing Mitie’s water consumption through continual improvement. Our water management strategy stems from our Integrated Management System, which meets the requirements of BS EN ISO 14001:2015. It also aligns with an environmental Aspects and Impacts Register specific to our service delivery.
